SPAIN JOINS EU HOTLINE FOR MISSING CHILDREN Costa Blanca Leader - News, Sport, Advertising, Property, Classifieds - Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, Costa Calida, Costa de Almeria, Spain: "Spain is the most recent country to join the 116 000 European phone help line number to report missing children which will allow the public to inform of a disappearance, give new data and to receive counselling and support.
According to data from the authorities here in Spain, there are some 20,000 reports of missing children each year. Benjamin Ballesteros from the 116 000 service said the disappearances fall into five categories – running away, kidnapping by a parent, a child emigrating alone, loss, and kidnap by a third party.
Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) not the police operate the number in each country and the call operators are trained professionals who are there to support and assist the families, the victims and the authorities and work very closely with local police. 116 000 is especially useful to travelling parents and children as the people answering the call will help to direct them to the appropriate authorities within that country."
