Spain to remove buoys in the water off Gibraltar: "Spain has said that some buoys, which were placed in the waters off the rock of Gibraltar by an oceanographic boat some weeks ago, will be removed today following a complaint from London. Britain noted that the buoys are inside the three-mile limit which London says is British water.

Outgoing Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, assured on Tuesday that the objective of the buoys was to collect data on currents and tides in order to improve the safety of maritime traffic in the Strait, and that they would be removed when the scientific study was over, which he then added would be ‘from the 20th’.

Moratinos denied that the buoys were to limit the extent of the colony’s waters, given that Spain did not recognise any water beyond the inside of the port.

The Gibraltar Chronicle reports that the complaint to Madrid was placed by David Lidington from the Foreign Office."
