Juan Martín Serón and the Partido Popular in the town have voted legal costs can be paid by municipal funds
The Partido Popular Mayor of Alhaurín el Grande, Juan Martín Serón, who is facing charges of bribery and perversion of the course of justice for allegedly accepting bankhanders in exchange for favourable building licences, for which the Prosecutor is demanding a four and a half year prison sentence, can use municipal funds to pay his legal defence until the time the court decides whether he is guilty or not.
The Town Planning Councillor, Gergorio Guerra, who is also charged in the Troya case, and who faces a seven year prison sentence, can also use the Town Hall funds.
The Partido Popular used its overall majority in the Town Hall to pass the measure, rejecting claims presented by the PSOE dating from last May.
In the case that the Mayor or others funded by the Town Hall are found guilty, the money will have to be refunded.
The Socialists consider this an abuse of the law, which they claim does not envisage the possibility of ‘advanced compensation’, and they have said they will challenge it in the courts. They say the Mayor can now spend a fortune, at the local residents’ expense, in obtaining a very expensive lawyer, and they doubt that should a guilty verdict be found, whether many of those charged would be in a position to pay such monies back.
The Mayor has justified the move saying both he and his councillors are immersed in court through the continuous complaints being placed by the Socialists and their ‘lies and falsehoods’. He claims the procedure is ‘absolutely legal’.
