Helsingin Sanomat - International Edition - Foreign: "Visas of hundreds of foreigners expiring
Worried foreigners jam police phone lines Yet another spinoff from the ongoing crisis in the skies as a result of the Icelandic volcanic activity is that a large number of foreign citizens have found themselves stuck in Finland with visas which are close to their expiry date or which have already expired.
According to the estimates made by the National Police Board, hundreds or some thousands of tourists could find themselves in such a situation.
Foreigners who are concerned about their situation have jammed the customer services and phones of Helsinki’s Immigration Police.
According to the Police, foreigners may leave Finland without renewing their expired visas if the delay has been caused by the flight ban.
The Police are prepared to extend the period of validity of a visa, if the person in question is to continue his or her trip to another Schengen country.
”One should not get worried if a visa’s period of validity is exceeded because of the flight ban. A flexible policy line will be applied, considering that this is a question of a force majeure situation that could not be foreseen”, confirms Jukka Hertel, a senior inspector at the National Police Board."
