A petition containing 590,000 signatures has been handed in today of people who want to see a law to protect bullfighting in Spain. 150,000 of the signatures came from Cataluña where the regional law has banned the practice. The bullfighting supporters want it to be declared and an Asset of Cultural Interest, and want the Catalan ban overturned. The lawyer for the Federation of Bullfighting Entities in Cataluña, Alejando Gash, spoke of his satisfaction at the size of the petition noting that it is three times higher than an earlier petition against bullfighting. The popular initiative is being presented in Congress at noon on Thursday with top matadors in attendance.
