Portugal has said that it is ‘definitively’ abandoning plans for an AVE high speed connection with Spain. The decision has been taken after a report from the Court of Accounts, and the Portuguese Economy Minister saying he will give priority to the transport of freight to stimulate exports. Work on the construction of the line was suspended in June 2011. The budget for the link was 1.4 billion € and was to be carried out by the Portuguese companies, Soares de Acosta and Brisa. They have told the Portuguese media that they are considering an appeal, and they demand compensation for the 264 million € they have already spent on the project. Meanwhile the Lisbon metro is closed today as the country faces its second General Strike in four months. The new labour reform approved by the cabinet has led to the new stoppage.
