Irish Independent reports today, Monday, that freed rapist, Larry Murphy, has relocated to southern Spain.
The 45 year old sex offender successfully applied for a passport and drivers licence when in prison, and was released in August after serving ten years of a fifteen year sentence for the repeated rape of a Carlow businesswoman in 2000. Murphy is reported to have refused offers of rehabilitation and counselling when in prison.
The paper reports that he made the decision to leave Ireland because of the huge media interest there and is officially ranked ‘high risk’.
Under the 2001 Sex Offenders Act, if he has left the country for good he is obliged to notify the Spanish authorities of his address.
Last month the Spanish police admitted that it did not have the resources to monitor all arriving sex offenders, and the Guardia Civil said it was concerned about the number of such arrivals, calling too for reinforcements for the coastal resorts over the summer.
