Today is the last day of the DGT traffic department controls which started at 3pm on Friday March 30.

During that time they say that as many as eight million journeys were taken, and long hold-ups were seen last night on entrance roads to Madrid and Barcelona, even though today, Monday, is a fiesta in both Cataluña and Valencia.

The situation was complicated by fog in places in the north of the country. There were 33 fatal accidents, resulting in the 40 fatalities this year. Last year the number to die on the Easter roads was 37.
