GROUP of nuns is being investigated for possible tax evasion after reporting a huge sum of cash stolen from their convent.

The elderly Cistercian sisters reported £1.3million missing, but later lowered the figure to £344,000.

Police are probing the theft from a cupboard in Zaragoza, Spain, while a magistrate looks at whether to bring tax evasion charges.

Jesus Garcia Huici, the nuns’ lawyer, said they paid tax and the cash was for giving alms to the poor.
