The military nature of the Guardia Civil still prohibits the guards from taking part in protests, strike action or political or union events, but despite this many are expected to gather today outside the Ministry for the Interior in Madrid. The AUGC Civil Guard Association has described the statement from the Ministry as a provocation.

They are demanding improvements in working conditions and a ‘dignified’ working day, and those who work in the Traffic Department have been carrying out a so-called ‘dropped ball point pen strike’ and restricting the numbers of fines being issued to motorists.

Meanwhile 20,000 youngsters are reported to have applied for 116 new Civil Guard places and presented for the examination to join the force. This year there are far fewer places on offer than in previous years.
