A meeting between lawyers from Central Government and lawyers representing from La Linea City Hall, held on Friday at the Contentious Court One in Algeciras, ended in an agreement that the two traffic signs installed by the local Ayuntamiento to divert traffic on its way to Gibraltar will be removed.

The signs resulted in traffic being diverted into the same single lane for access to the Rock ahead of the plans from La Línea to impose a 5€ toll on travellers to Gibraltar, and were introduced earlier in the week, resulting in some delays, especially for lorries.

The acceptance from La Linea Town Hall to remove the signs is not, however, acceptance to cancel the plans for the toll which the Partido Popular Mayor, Alejandro Sánchez, has said he will start on the Pilar Bank Holiday Weekend on October 12.

The local council lawyer, Ricardo Fernández de Vera, said that the agreement on the signs ‘had nothing to do with plans for the toll’, and that these plans are moving ahead.

He told El País that the land involved is the old Princesa Sofía Park which borders on Gibraltar, and that his land is municipal according to the registry.

Friday was National Day in Gibraltar. Ex Gibraltar First Minister and leader of the opposition on the Rock, Joe Bossano, said that the events in La Línea was linked to the Spanish Socialist Government being accused by the P.P. of not defending Spain’s interests. He considered it was part of a more global P.P strategy to get more votes by being ‘more patriotic’ than the left wing.
